| What is a Nurse Practitioner |
|
A Nurse Practitioner is a registered nurse who has completed additional advanced level educational requirements. Nurse Practitioners have training in the diagnosis and management of common, as well as complex, medical and psychiatric conditions. NPs provide primary and acute care, chronic disease management, and are qualified to meet the majority of patients’ healthcare needs. They practice in clinics, hospitals, emergency rooms, urgent care facilities, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, schools and colleges, and private NP practices. All states require a national board certification. In Tennessee, a Master’s Degree is required before you can practice with this designation. Collaboration is a significant benefit to using a Nurse Practitioner. NPs communicate with physicians and other professionals in the patient’s healthcare network, Medication Management is an important role of the Nurse Practitioner. Often due to their more frequent and personal interaction with the patient, medications can be prescribed more effectively and in some cases, fewer are required. Lower healthcare costs are being reported by people utilizing a NP for quality healthcare and counseling services. According to The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, patients who use a NP as their primary care provider often have fewer emergency room visits, shorter hospital stays, and lower medication costs. Some NPs obtain a degree specializing in psychiatric mental health – those NPs are designated as a Psychiatric Mental Health NP (PMHNP). PMHNPs provide a high level of psychiatric counseling, psychiatric medication management, wellness education, and educational consultations to families. >p> Nurse practitioners have become a popular referral source. Since many train and specialize in a specific area of medicine, they gain the trust from fellow healthcare professionals to further evaluate and treat their patients. An estimated 600 million visits to NPs will be made this year showing the high level of acceptance and trust with these healthcare providers. |

Nurse practitioners (NPs) have provided a high level of healthcare services to patients for more than 45 years. The nurse practitioner role had its inception in the mid-1960s in response to a nationwide shortage of physicians. As of 2010, there are about 135,000 practicing NPs in the US.
